Afternoon With the Authors @ Thurber House

June 28, 2014 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Thurber House is excited to announce its inaugural Afternoon with the Authors. Join us on Saturday, June 28 from 1-3 p.m. as we bring four award-winning, up-and-coming middle grade and Young Adult authors to read from their latest novel, share their insights in the publishing world, answer all of your questions, and of course, sign your books!

Partnering with Worthington Libraries, this is an afternoon full of fun, food, and fabulous authors you won’t want to miss. The event takes place at Thurber Center, 91 Jefferson Ave. on Saturday, June 28 from 1-3 p.m.  The cost is only $5 and students 5 and under are free. There will be light refreshments and opportunities to purchase the authors’ books and have them signed. Readings will start at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. but you can come and go as you like. There is metered parking all along Jefferson Ave. and free parking at the parking lot on the corner of Long St. and Jefferson Ave.

There will be two readings going on simultaneously, but all of the authors will sign books before or after their reading, so you will have time to cover everything. Thurber House, next door to Thurber Center, will also be open for free, self-guided tours and if the weather is nice enough, you can take a picnic lunch to the gazebo in the park across the street. You can make a whole day of it!

Afternoon with the Authors reading lineup:

1-2 p.m.: Suzanne Goldsmith-Hirsch, Washashore

Mindy McGinnis, Not a Drop to Drink

2-3 p.m.: Katrina Kittle, Reasons to be Happy

Kristen Kittscher, The Wig in the Window

About the Authors:

Washashore is Suzanne Goldsmith’s first novel and is already nominated for an Ohioana Book Award and is on the short list for the 2014 Green Earth Book Award. She is also the author of City Year, detailing the year she spent with City Year, the community-service organization. She currently lives in Bexley, Ohio and is working on her second novel. Visit her website for more information: www.suzanne-goldsmith.com

More about Washashore: Fourteen-year-old Clementine is spending the winter on the small island of Martha’s Vineyard. She’s what the locals call a “Washashore”—an outsider. Clem doesn’t fit in . . . here. Her parent’s aren’t getting along . . . here. Coco, her best friend from Boston, just plain isn’t . . . here. But then Clem finds a fallen bird—an osprey—on the beach, which leads her to a lonely boy named Daniel. And everything changes . . .

Mindy McGinnis is no stranger to Thurber House having worked with our teens in Young Writers’ Studio. This time she will read from Not a Drop to Drink, her debut dystopian novel that was just chosen as a Choose to Read Ohio book for 2015-16 and was just optioned by Stephenie Meyer’s Fickle Fish Films. The companion book, In a Handful of Dust, will be released this September. Mindy is an assistant Young Adult Librarian when she’s not creating dystopian worlds. More about Not a Drop to Drink: In a world with almost no water, Lynn’s knows she must protect her pond at all costs. She makes sure that anything, or anyone, who comes near the pond leaves thirsty, or doesn’t leave at all. But she sees wisps of smoke on the horizon that mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it. . .

Kristen Kittscher is Thurber House’s 2014 Children’s Writer-in-Residence. She will be staying in Thurber House’s haunted third-floor apartment from June through July while she works on her new novel and teaches creative writing classes around the community. When she’s not staying at Thurber House, she lives in Pasadena California and is a seventh grade English teacher, and writing tutor. The Wig in the Window is Kristen’s first novel and she is already editing the sequel, The Tiara on the Terrace. Check out the fun things on her website here: www.kristenkittscher.com

More about The Wig in the Window: Best friends and seventh graders Sophie Young and Grace Yang love spying on their neighbors until they stumble across a terrifying, bloody scene at the home of their bizarre middle school counselor, or at least they think they do…the truth is that Dr. Agford was just making her famous (and messy) pickled beets! But when Dr. Agford begins acting even weirder than usual, Sophie and Grace become convinced that she’s hiding something–and they’re determined to find out what it is. As their investigation heats up, the girls start to crack under the pressure. Even if Sophie and Grace uncover the truth in time, will their friendship survive?

Katrina Kittle is the author of Traveling Light, Two Truths and a LieThe Kindness of Strangers, and The Blessings of the Animals. Reasons to be Happy is Katrina Kittle’s first tween novel, and it received critical acclaim from Kirkus reviews, Booklist, and VOYA magazine among others. She was the 2013 John E. Nance Writer-in-Residence at Thurber House and since returning to Dayton, is working on her next novel and  teaching creative writing workshops for all ages. Check out her website for more: www.katrinakittle.com.

More about Reasons to be Happy: Hannah is an eighth grader trying her hardest to cling to what she knows and loves while her world shatters around her. Her parents are glamorous Hollywood royalty, and sometimes she feels like the ugly duckling in a family of swans. Faced with her mother’s death and her father’s withdrawal into grief, Hannah turns to the one thing she can control: her weight. Hannah’s self-destructive secret takes over her life, and not even the quirky misfit Jasper—the only one who seems to notice or care—can help. It will take a journey unlike any other to remind Hannah of who she really is, and to begin to get that girl back. Reasons to Be Happy is about standing up for all the things you love—including yourself.
